Comments on a Valley Real Life sermon entitled A Will to Live

The church my in-laws go to posts its sermons each week for people to download. It also broadcasts these sermons over a local radio station. I try to listen to the sermons once in a while because I find that it helps me predict my in-laws' attitudes toward my family. If the pastor preaches about them there evil atheists, my in-laws are more likely to treat us negatively. On the contrary, if the pastor preaches about reaching the unsaved, they will try to act loving and give us books etc to convert us.

I usually just listen and then forget about it. But, I've noticed MANY problems with these sermons and I'm appalled that nobody stands up to this pastor when he makes mistakes. So, I'm going to try to add a regular section to my blog that analyzes these sermons. Each time I do this, I will also post the link to the download so that people can listen to the sermon themselves.

Today, I listened to this sermon after I had read my regular blogs. On the Richard Dawkins website, I found an article rebutting comments from a Bishop Boteach. One part of this article speaks of preacher shrieks and R.D aptly points out that many preachers resort to screaming to get their point across and perhaps this stems from the low substance within the sermon. He argues that "there is some kind of inverse relationship between the sensible content of a speech and the decibel level needed to sway an audience."

UFOs and Intelligent Design

by Slendid Elles

Today I got done with my final exams for my college classes, was hanging around, when I heard that MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) was doing some sort of lecture on campus. I figured, why not? Maybe they had some evidence that would shake my view of the world… Eh… maybe not. At the very least, I should be open minded, right?

So I went. It was a lecture by a Native American named Rainbow Eagle.

Before I continue, I feel I need to make the following disclaimer, because I’ll essentially be calling the man an ignunt fool.

Rainbow Eagle, you have a great personality. You are a very nice person. Very friendly. Humble. And you have a really awesome name. I wish I’d been named something like… Rainbow Jelly Fish… or… Sparkling Eagle.

So, we saw a video of some guy speaking in Spanish (with English voice-overs) about how apparently their belief (which has allegedly been verified by science) is that humans were planted here some 12,000 years ago by aliens. That’s 6,000 more years than the young earth creationists think we’ve been here. Not too bad.

And then, the guy in the video started talking about… wait for it… wait for it…

Quantum Mechanics!

What a surprise. And you know those words that New Age gurus use so much when talking about quantum mechanics? Vibration, frequency, energy? Yup. All those words were there.

See, we can only experience certain frequencies, but some people can experience other frequencies, and therefore see into parallel universes.

Bad Arguments Against Evolution

I know many of you have blogged these arguments in the past, but they pop up so often, I thought I would put up my responses here.  Please add thoughts on these silly arguments and feel free to add your own favorite argument!

The first one is, "That's just micro evolution! That's adaptation! It's not MACRO evolution!"

This is a horrible argument!  Religious folks fought micro evolution too last century. Before that they fought the evidence that the earth was in the center of the universe.

They fight it until the data are insurmountable, then they move the goalpost so that they don't look like complete idiots denying clear science.

Among scientists there is no discussion.  There is no controversy.  Call it micro, call it macro, it all is evolution.  The boundaries are purely arbitrary and human imposed.  Careful analysis of the fossil record shows that macro evolution is a consequence of successive rounds of micro evolution.  A few years ago evolution itself was questioned, but when we can demonstrate that it occurs just as predicted, then they have to change their position (or risk looking silly) and call what is provable in a weekend, microevolution, knowing darn well that we can't do a ten million year experiment.  That's some intellectual honesty there!
